La La Sardina!

The name's Sardina, La Sardina.
Or you can call me Dina, if you like. I like Dina.
Never call me La Sar, though. Or Sardi. I like Dina the best.
I first swam my way into Sasha's life on the 17th of September when she dropped by the Red Dot Museum to collect me after being shortlisted for the LoBlography challenge.
She doesn't like to admit it, but it was love at first sight.
Ah, my colour! The Fritz the Blitz flash!
When Sasha first held me (in my shiny sleek packaging) in her hands, I knew she knew how painful it would be to let me go.
And for the record, she hasn't. Let me go, that is. She barely puts me down. (Except on her occasional trips to the toilet. That would be awkward. Me and Sasha? We're close. But not THAT close)
Sasha's head over heels, let me tell 'ya. She takes me on walks and insists on getting to know me better.
We're a power couple. When people see us together, they get pretty jealous. It makes Sasha smile, when people ask her how she met me. "Best. Flipping. Day. Of. My. Life" Always the answer.
Now, you may be wondering: What makes me any more special than the Diana F+, Sasha's first-ever lomography camera that has a special corner at the top of her IKEA BILLY bookshelf? Or her Vivtar Ultra Wide & Slim, hanging in a pouch at her doorknob, ready to be brought out on her adventures at a split second's notice? Or even the Golden Half? Teensy and ridiculously adorable in its own right?
I don't like to boast (we fish - we're pretty humble). But let me tell you this: I am pretty darn awesome.
Why? I have a dazzling wide-angle lens. It's like how I see out of my fishbowl. Wide and strange and intriguing.
Friends share, and so I love to let Sasha see the world, my way. All she has to do is place her eyes behind my plastic submarine-esque viewfinder, and she is enchanted.
Fish are simple. We're easy to understand. So you don't need to be a hare-core lomographic pro to take delightful little lomographs with me. I have two focus settings, Close-up (0.6-1m) and Beyond(1m-INFINITY). Pretty easy, huh? Don't get too close with me, though. Fish get really freaked out when you tap their fishbowls!
If you're feeling too lazy, or are in the mood to double-expose a shot you are currently on, just crank my MX (that's 'Mulitple Exposure') knob and you're set! See? I told you. We fish, we're simple.

All fish need buddies, and I am lucky enough to have my trusty Fritz the Blitz flash to stick by me through thick and thin. The dazzling light it shoots out lights the deepest depths of the ocean and let's me take the perfect image, every time. Plus, it helps that my Fitz the Blitz is a real looker. He helps me get all the ladies (when Sasha's not looking, I like them oysters *wink wink*).
If your La Sardina doesn't come with a flash, FEAR NOT! We fish - we're VERSATILE. That's why I have a bulb mode, you see? Just prop me up on a tripod (or a level surface, like a sea anaemone or a sleeping sea turtle) and switch my mode from 'Normal' to 'Bulb'. A flick of a switch, just like that!
Then all you have to do is hold open my shutter long enough to get pretty awesome pictures with a dreamy effect. It works for night images too, because I get more light that way. Mess around, experiment! Try taking bulb images of moving lights, cars, cats, oysters. You name it!
You would think that being out of my pond, away for all my other sardine friends, I would be one hell of a lonely fish. I thought I would be, too.
I was wrong.
Sasha's other lomo cameras and accessories are the bomb. We get along so well. Birds of a feather flock together (fish of a scale swim together?). We're tight.
The Diana F+ Flash is a darling. Sometimes my Fritz the Blitz flash gets tired. Sometimes it gets lonely. Sometimes it gets real dark so much so that even my powerful Fritzy needs a partner-in-crime. Then it's the Diana F+ Flash to the rescue.
And then there's the Diana Cable release. Not Sasha's cable release, but her friend's; Jodie's cable release keeps my shutter open for longtime exposures when Sasha's too lazy (she's a TEENAGER, pffft) to hold my shutter down manually.
Or when Sasha just wants a bit of my sardine action, too.
(Again, TEENAGERS)

It helps in light painting, too.

The Holga Fisheye is a piece of home. A friend from the pond. You have never truly seen everything until you have looked from behind a fisheye lens. Paired with my wide-angle view, the fisheye pictures come out truly spectacular. My shutter is tingling. I love the fisheye.
Being with Sasha over the past few weeks has taught me a lot about her. Most significantly, she hates rules. Eww. Gross. Ick. Gag. Rules? Bleah! So what does she think about the '10 golden rules of lomography'?
"Pooeh!"
But if she did have to chose her favourite rule, it would be Rule 4.
Take a shot from the hip. Literally.
I've gotten my fair share of hip action these past few days, and I am loving it.
The best bit? It's great for candid shots. And what kind of photos are better than those that are candid?
Sometimes they come out arse-kicking, fist-pumping.

Sometimes, you miss.

Sometimes, you take pictures OF your hips (Sasha is an odd one)
But every time, the picture is breathtaking. It's like Christmas - you never know what to expect but you always, always know it will be spectacular.
It's breaking Sasha's heart to be with me.
Love sucks.
But she will always remember me. The surprisingly sturdy, weirdly-comforting, adorably-sardine-can like lomo.
There are plenty of fish in the sea, but Sasha and I have been brought together by fate. And as long as time will allow it, we will be together. Until then, Sasha is never letting me out of he sight, and I can't complain. Fish love the attention, you see? We were made for each other and I will never, ever let her down.
There is someone for everyone, in life and at lomography. So grab your fishing hooks, bait and fishbowls and head on down to lomography to get you other half, your soulmate, your very own la Sardina.
I promise, we never disappoint.

xoxo

Because you can't experience the rest of the rules unless you have your Lomo camera all the time :)
